There is no concrete solution because this questionnaire part measures one of the facets of a construct, which is
takes a central role in the work. I don't think I'm allowed to reveal more at this point, but there is a little clarification at the end

Found the task interesting as well, I'm curious about the resolution.

Is the complete bachelor thesis actually published somewhere or viewable online?

I kind of had a year in mind for me, anything over that was too long^^

Ohh god I hope not^^

I would be a bit embarrassed. It's enough for me that I have two professors as examiners, one of whom is our study program coordinator, others have simple employees from the chair.
But with my luck, anything else would really surprise me

Hello together,

yesterday was the deadline and as promised I'll report back here with the results.

BUT: First I would like to thank again all who have supported me with a participation and the kind words here in the forum: THANK YOU !!!

Now to the results:

P.S. there is a lot of text coming ^^

My research question was broadly: What are the similarities and differences between a problematic online gambling and a problematic online shopping. I mainly looked at the personality traits: Impulsivity (in general and a subfacet of Impulsivity Sensation Seeking separately) and Materialism (i.e. how important someone's possession of material goods is in life). In addition, the usage expectations were also examined (whether one plays/shops because it [the action] is simply fun, or to escape from certain feelings etc., i.e. to simply switch off).

For this purpose, I conducted two surveys with two different target groups.

For the evaluation, I made separate calculations for six hypotheses (So for each target group separately) and looked if the correlations in both groups are somehow similar.

My findings on this: Both target groups seem to have a significant correlation between the user expectations and the respective behavior. In the case of shopping, this correlation was visible for both sub-facets (i.e. having fun and avoidance expectations). For gamblers the correlation was only visible for the subfacet avoidance expectation. (So these were hypotheses 1 and 2).

We continued with impulsivity.

Impulsivity as a variable was collected with three different measurement procedures one before that was the 5-trial adjusting delay discounting task (Koffarnus & Bickel, 2014). These were the questions with 500€ immediately or 1000€ later.

While the survey was running, I couldn't write much about it here, but because you found these questions so interesting, here is a short summary:

These questions aimed to operationalize Impulsive Choice (A facet of Impulsivity). To do this, the discount rate was calculated (i.e., to what extent would one prefer an immediate worse alternative to a later better alternative).

Each participant started with the question 500€ immediately or 1000€ in 3 weeks and depending on which answer was chosen the delay was adjusted (e.g. the one who chose 500€ immediately got next the question: 500€ immediately or 1000€ in 1 day and the one who chose 1000€ in 3 weeks got the question: 500€ immediately or 1000€ in two years). The delays were in the range of 1hour- 25 years.

A high value indicates a more impulsive behavior (one is less willing to wait for the better alternative), a low value indicates a less impulsive behavior.

I don't think I'm allowed to publish the exact values, but I can say that both samples were in an average range and similar results came out for both groups.

Overall, I only recorded a correlation between one subfacet of a scale (UPPS lack of intent) measuring impulsivity and gambling. The other scales measuring impulsivity showed no relationship between the two variables.

In contrast, for the shopping group, other scales also showed a relationship with impulsivity

Further hypotheses were used to investigate whether impulsivity has an effect on problematic behavior that is moderated by user expectations (i.e., is dependent on user expectations). This was not the case in any of the target groups.

For two other hypotheses, I combined the data sets from the two surveys into one and then compared the groups (gamblers vs. shoppers) directly, in one calculation.

The question examined was whether the materialism value is greater for shoppers than for gamblers. Answer: No (at least according to my surveys)

And last hypothesis with the investigation, whether the Sensation Seeking values are larger with the Gamblern than with the Shoppern. Again, the answer is no (according to the results of my surveys).

The only thing to mention is that in both groups the participants showed rather low symptom severity

If there should be still questions, gladly still until Monday.

Thanks again !!!

Today with rather cloudy greetings ^^

Kristina

That's very sweet

I had at the end not even the time for acknowledgements (is allowed to insert before the actual work), otherwise I would have certainly written one and mentioned here the community with ^^
