In the US Federal State of California an eighty-year-old nun had to answer in court for stealing around 800,000 US-Dollar from school funds. The old woman who had got the money wrongfully had lost the same money in gambling among other things. But must the elderly accused now go to court for her actions?

In January of this year, we had reported about a bank employee who had embezzled 460,000 Euro and gambled them away. The 44-year-old was sentenced to a prison sentence of two years and eight months by the district court of Kassel. In a recent case an eighty-year-old nun from the US Federal State of California has embezzled the amount of around 800,000 US-Dollar from school funds. A few weeks ago, the nun showed her remorse when in court.

“Thou shalt not steal“

The nuns undertake the oath to live in poverty, to chastity and obedience. It seems however that the eighty-year-old religious sister has had enough of living in poverty. She took the opportunity and embezzled around 800,000 US-Dollar. This breaches the seventh commandment of the church which says that one shall not steal. The woman of faith embezzled the several hundred thousand of US-Dollar from the cash till of a school.

According to the responsible prosecution the 800,000 Dollar would have been enough to pay the school fees for 14 schoolchildren for a period of ten years. The misappropriation of funds came to light during a comprehensive audit. The responsible head of school had tried to keep the scandal a secret and to destroy all the relevant documents – however she did not succeed.

Loot was gambled away

The highly talented woman had gambled away the loot in different casinos, among other things. She had also “afforded” to go on several luxury holidays in the gambling metropole Las Vegas. Only a few days ago we had reported that online payments would soon be possible in online casinos in Vegas. The accused admitted in court to committing the offence and she was ashamed for her actions:

“I have sinned, I broke the law, and I have no excuse.”

Religious sister condemned to a prison sentence

A few weeks ago, the Court in California condemned the 80-year-old accused to a prison sentence of one year and one day. The prosecution had actually condemned the woman to a significantly longer sentence of two years.

The defence of the religious sister requested the court that she is given permission to serve her sentence in a convent. Besides this, he admitted that his mandate suffered from a gambling addiction and thus she needed help. In July of last year we had reported how one can recognise gambling addiction and try and overcome it.

Conclusion

An 80-year-old nun has illegally transferred 800.000 US Dollar from the school funds to her own account and she has gambled away most of the money. Further to this, she rewarded herself with expensive luxury trips to Las Vegas. Now the religious sister has been condemned to a prison sentence of one year and one month. This case shows that even a nun can suffer from a problematic gambling behaviour and can therefore even become a criminal.
