Just a few days ago the casino Maximus in Schaan opened the sixth casino in Liechtenstein. Thus the gambling sector in the country has changed completely within a few years. Since 1949 there had been a nationwide ban on gambling, which was then lifted in 2010 through the Gambling Act. But what is the reason for the sudden and massive increase in the number of casinos in Liechtenstein?

In December 2017 we had already reported about gambling in Liechtenstein, at that time the first two casinos had opened in the small municipality. In a span of less than five years further casinos have entered the scene. A few days ago the sixth casino has just opened its doors in the country, namely the Casino Maximus in the tranquil locality of Schaan. Therefore there are now six casinos for around 40,000 inhabitants. Statistically speaking this comes up to one casino for every 6700 inhabitants.

Casino Maximus in Schaan opens ist doors

Just a few days ago the Casino Maximus opened its doors in the tranquil locality of Schaan. The casino is surrounded by a magical mountain backdrop and according to its own information it provides an “elegant atmosphere”. The casino Maximus has been ready to open for some time but it was apparently waiting for the final permission. According to the website of the casino it does not only offer a large smoking area, but also a total of 70 parking spaces for visitors at no extra charges. Besides this, guests entering the casino are expected to dress “appropriately and be well-groomed” and the establishment points out that “Guests with dirty, torn or otherwise unsuitable attire will be refused entry”. But how attractive are the gambling offers at the Casino Maximus?

There are 180 slot machines of the latest generation, which were provided by the renowned producers Novomatic, SG Gaming, IGT, Aristocrat, Apex and EGT. Besides, the guests visiting the newly opened Casino Maximus in Schaan can look forward to Blackjack, Texas Hold’em Poker and American Roulette.

Is Liechtenstein the Las Vegas of Europe?

Since a long time the “Casino/inhabitants ratio” in Liechtenstein has been approaching that of the gambling metropoles Macau and Las Vegas. Further to this, Liechtenstein is already planning to open further casinos. To be more precise, two further applications have been filed at the Office for Economic Affairs. One of these has been filed by The BestWin plc which would like to open the Plaza-Casino in Schaan. The LV Investments plc has filed the other application to open a casino in nereby Eschen. In 2020 we had published an article about this issue - Liechtenstein - the long journey from tax paradise to gambling temple.

The five casinos which are already operating in Liechtenstein totalled gross revenues amounting to around 82 million Francs in the past year. More than 28 million Francs of this was paid as casino tax and one million Francs as the so-called administration tax to the state coffers. Thus, gambling has become quite a lucrative- source of income for the municipality of Liechtenstein. Around a year ago we raised the issue in an article, whether Liechtenstein is already the Las Vegas of Europa ist.

Conclusion

Meanwhile there are already six casinos for a population of around 40,000 inhabitants in the municipality of Liechtenstein. As things stand, two more casinos could be added in the coming years. It is mainly wealthy foreign tourists from the neighbouring countries of Switzerland or Germany who bring such a lucrative source of revenue for the casino operators. We are excited to see how the casino boom in Liechtenstein will evolve in the future.
