Review of last season

The 2022 NFL season began on 8. September last year and was the 103rd season of its kind. Season of its kind. Prior to the start of the season, the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs were considered the favourites. Odds-on favourites were the Cincinnati Bengals and the reigning champions, the Los Angeles Rams. The usual suspects, San Francisco and Dallas, also entered the 2022 season as realistic contenders. The eternal Tom Brady had his last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

For German NFL fans, NFL Week 10 was certainly the highlight, as Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took on the Seattle Seahawks in Munich's Allianz Arena. The spectacle ended with a 21-16 victory for the Bucs.Sportingly, the Philadelphia Eagles came out firing on all cylinders, laying the foundation for their Superbowl campaign with eight straight wins. The Eagles impressed with their team spirit and quarterback Jalen Hurts. NFL Playoffs and Superbowl 2022/23

The playoffs began on 14. The playoffs began on 14 January 2023, initially with six wild-card rounds, with six teams qualifying for the Divisional Round. The Divisional Round is similar to the fourth round of a major tournament. Like all the other play-off matches, it will be played in a classic knockout format. The Philadelphia Eagles, who had been impressive throughout the season, met the San Francisco 49ers. On 29. The Eagles went on to defeat the 49ers 31-7 at Lincoln Financial Field to advance to the Super Bowl. Kansas City and the Cincinnati Bengals played the other conference championship game. It was a much closer affair, with the Chiefs coming out on top thanks to the performances of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. The rematch will take place on 12. Philadelphia Eagles vs. Kansas City Chiefs at the University of Phoenix Stadium on 12 February 2023. According to the various bookmakers, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs went into the game as slight favourites. After a fairly even first quarter, the Eagles came out firing in the second, thanks in part to a stunning 45-yard touchdown pass and 28-yard rush by Jalen Hurts, who himself scored a touchdown shortly afterwards to send the Eagles into the break with a 24-14 lead. It felt like half the world was looking at the enchanting Rihanna, who was both musically and visually impressive. The second half began with Kansas City in the ascendancy, leading 28-27 at the start of the fourth quarter. Kadarius Toney's 65-yard punt return was one to remember. Shortly afterwards, Patrick Mahomes scored a touchdown pass to give Kansas City a 35-27 lead. Jalen Hurts and the Eagles tried to come back to tie the game at 35-35. In the end, a field goal by the attacking Kansas City team proved decisive.

The NFL season in a nutshell

The US sports system is a little different from what we know from Europe. I would like to explain the basic differences as well as the course of an NFL season. First of all, the regular season consists of 18 games, which means that each team plays 17 games. Unlike in the Bundesliga, for example, it is not everyone against everyone. The schedule is determined by the different divisions, without going into too much detail here. Since the 2002 season, the NFL has consisted of 32 teams, which are divided into two conferences and the conferences into four divisions. The best teams in each conference compete in a K.O.-system after the regular season and play for a place in the Super Bowl, one of the biggest sporting events in the world.

The Betting Favorites

32 teams enter the season, but only a few have a realistic chance of hoisting the Vince Lombardi Trophy into the night sky over Paradise, Nevada in February. The Super Bowl LVIII will be played on 11. February 2024. Let us take a closer look at the favourites.

Kansas City Chiefs
The current defending champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, are the top favourites for the upcoming Super Bowl, according to both us and the bookmakers. Bet365 are currently offering their users odds of over 7.00, which is slightly higher than their competitors. The duo of Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid are the mainstays of what is undoubtedly one of the NFL's most potent offenses. Then there is Travis Kelce at tight end. The defence has been held together for years by Chris Jones. With a well-coordinated team and individual class, we have Kansas City right at the top of the table.

Philadelphia Eagles
Philadelphia's other Super Bowl participant from last year is also among the favourites this year. Nick Sirianni's team did not suffer any major losses during the summer break. However, it is the offence of quarterback Jalen Hurts that remains the standout performer. The Philadelphia Eagles also have the not insignificant advantage of playing in a National Football Conference that is slightly weaker than the American Conference of the other Super Bowl favourites. If Jalen Hurts remains injury-free, we see the Eagles as the absolute favourites in the NFC. Bet365 are currently offering odds of over 8.50 on the 2018 champions.

Buffalo Bills
The Bills were big favourites to win the Super Bowl last season. The entire franchise took almost 20 years to build a formidable team between 2000 and 2016. In 2017, they finally made the playoffs after 18 long seasons. Since then, they have been regulars in the finals, but have never won a Super Bowl.

This year, the defence is considered to be the strongest part of the team, partly because quarterback Josh Allen struggled to live up to expectations last season. Despite this, Sean McDermott's side will be looking to bring their first ever Super Bowl back to Buffalo. Last season, they lost 27-10 to the Bengals in the Divisional Round after a disastrous performance, despite being favourites based on their previous performances.

The extended favourites for the 2023 Super Bowl

The bookmakers also agree on the extended favourites. The San Francisco 49ers are definitely to be mentioned here. Founded in 1946, the 49ers are one of the oldest franchises in the game. After a classic rebuild, the best franchise of the eighties is back on track. Injury problems at quarterback meant that the 49ers had no chance against the Eagles in the NFL Conference Championship game and missed out on a Super Bowl berth. Things changed over the summer, when QB Trey Lance was traded to the Dallas Cowboys and Brock Purdy was promoted to the starting job. If Purdy can start to show his potential and start to feed the offence, we see the 49ers right up there. The defensive side of the ball is less of a concern, as it is considered to be the best in the league.

In addition to the aforementioned teams, the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets are also in the running. The Jets have brought in multiple MVP Aaron Rodgers. The 39-year-old is now calling for his "last dance" and, after a poor season with the Green Bay Packers, is challenging the young generation around Joe Burrow of the Bengals and Justin Herbert of the L.A. Chargers.

The Jets won seven games last season and currently have two of the best young players in the game in Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner. Bet365 are offering 17.00 on one last big throw from NFL legend Aaron Rodgers ahead of the season.

TV broadcast in Germany

For years, Ran NFL was one of the most popular sports programmes in Germany, but this year the party has come to an end. RTL has secured the NFL rights for the coming season. What exactly does this mean?

- According to RTL, more games will be broadcast free of charge on TV.

- We can expect up to three NFL games per week.

- The broadcasts will be shown either on the classic RTL channel or on RTL Nitro.

- RTL also broadcasts additional games via RTL Plus, with monthly packages costing €4.99 and €9.99.

- Patrick Esume, Jana Wosnitza and Frank Buschmann will guide you through the season.

If you don't want to rely on RTL broadcasts and want the full package, the NFL GamePass is the way to go. The Game Pass has been sold via DAZN since this season and allows you to watch all NFL games via streaming. An English commentator accompanies you through the games, while the highlight matches are also available with a German commentator. The Season Pass Pro costs €171.99 and the Weekly Pass costs €17.99. Of course, NFL games can still be watched with a DAZN subscription, and the streaming platform even offers its own NFL conference.

Surprisingly, Amazon has secured the rights to NFL Thursday, so if you have an Amazon Prime subscription, you can watch the games with English commentary.
