A sports betting fraudster of millions was caught by the police in Australia a few days ago. Among other things, the 59-year-old is accused of defrauding a gambler from Hong Kong of Bitcoins amounting to the value of more than 1.2 million US-Dollar But how did the man do this and which punishment is he now facing?

Some months ago we had reported about the highest sports betting winnings of all time. Among other things here we had reported about a betting customer, who had won more than 100,000 Euro with his 5-Euro betting ticket. Even higher were the winnings of a 59-year old, who dabbled as a sports betting fraudster. He scammed a man from Hong Kong illegal Bitcoins worth more than 1.2 million US-Dollar.

Fraudster was on the run for six months

The bold sports betting fraudster had been on the run since May of this year. In the beginning of December, the Australian police was then able to find and arrest the man in a country region in the North of Melbourne. According to details from the authorities, the perpetrator was found to be in poor health when he was arrested. For this reason, it was decided to take the man to hospital first. However in the long run the man will end up in prison.

How did the perpetrator proceed?

The 59-year-old seems to have stated in front of one of the victims, that among other things he had placed sports bets for him. And thus the victim from Hong Kong had transferred 100 Bitcoins to the perpetrator. However the older man did not even think of placing the sports bet as he had agreed to. Instead the perpetrator transferred the money to his own bank accounts. This happened in 2019 and 2020.

In other cases the perpetrator had also acted in similar ways. The man is being accused of a total of 15 charges. The perpetrator had already been arrested previously but he was let free after paying bail. However he had then disappeared suddenly before he could be rearrested. One can now assume that the man will spend the coming time in prison.

It is still not clear whether the injured party will receive at least a part of the funds back or if it is the case that the perpetrator has already spent all the money. In September of this year we reported about a travel agent from Australia who had gambled nearly 630,000 US-Dollar.

Conclusion

It is the second time that a serial fraudster was imprisoned in Australia. It is still questionable why the damaged party simply sent the Bitcoins which were worth more than 1.2 million US-Dollar to the sports betting fraudster instead of placing the bet himself. We are assuming that the 59-year-old who is a detainee must now spend several years in prison. We still have to wait and see whether the man is in a position to pay the money back to the injured parties and whether he will do so.
