An unemployed Swiss woman failed to inform the relevant authorities about her extra income after winning 9,000 CHF in a casino. Since the woman receives social benefits from the government, she was obliged to register the win. A few weeks ago she had to appear in court to respond to this. But what penalty is she facing?

In April of last year we had published an article questioning whether unemployed can take part in gambling. A 35-year old woman from Switzerland visited a casino and was actually lucky - she won 9,000 Swiss Francs, i.e. around 8,600 Euro. The problem: The Swiss woman is on social benefits and she was obliged to register such a large winning.

Casino-winner lives on the bare minimum

As it was announced a few weeks ago, this casino winner is living with her three kids on the poverty line. She receives social benefits and was of course really happy when she won the sum of 9,000 CHF in a casino. In hindsight the unemployed woman admitted that she was not aware that she had to register her casino win.

However the rule applies of course. Ignorance is no defence. For this reason a few weeks ago the woman who receives social benefits had to answer for her actions in a court in Aargau. Unfortunately, besides keeping quiet on the casino winning, the woman had also failed to declare an inheritance to the responsible social service office. She had to pay a fine for this.

Since a few months the popular slot machines from Novoline are available online once again for players from Switzerland. In June 2021 we had reported that the Book of Ra™ and Co. may be played online once again.

Conclusion

The woman who is on social benefits and hails from Switzerland has received a fine, the value of which is undisclosed. It is still not clear whether the state aid money for the casino winner has been accordingly deducted or if she can still keep the winnings for her and for her small family. However it is not advisable to keep casino winnings a secret from social services, since these can lead to penalties and additional payments.
