A few days ago, a court in Singapore sentenced a young man to several years imprisonment, among other things for hostage taking. The 25-year-old accused seems to have captivated his online date in the hotel room and demanded around 48,000 Euro from the woman. The perpetrator had boasted that he wanted to pay his gambling debts with the hostage money.

The spectacular hostage took place way back in March 2021 in Marina Bay Sands Casino-Resort. The 25-year-old perpetrator had agreed to have a date with his victim in the hotel room. After having consensual intercourse, the man apparently took hostage of the woman for several hours and demanded money from her. A court in Singapore sentenced the man to several years imprisonment as well as several stick beatings. In Summer 2019 we had reported in an article about an accountant from Singapore, who had embezzled 41 million dollar and used them for gambling.

25-year-old held his nude victim in captivity and demanded money from her

The young man was staying at the Marina Bay Sands Casino-Resort in Singapore. He agreed to meet his young victim in his hotel room. The meeting was planned as a date, and they also had consensual intercourse.

However, at the end of the evening the 25-year-old pounced on the victim, who was still in the nude, and who wanted to use the bathroom at the time. He hereby went on to shackle her from the hands and feet and threatened her with physical violence and made her give him the data for her online banking. In the hours that followed the perpetrator used the smartphone of the woman to make several transfers. In all the transactions which were enforced amounted to nearly 48,000 Euro.

Besides the man had tried to raise credit amounting to 64,000 Singapore-Dollar in her name. Luckily this attempt failed and thus no further damages arose. The blackmailer released the woman the next morning. However he had previously warned her not to go to the police. He threatened to publish nude images of her on the internet.

In terms of surface area, Singapore is the smallest state in Southeast Asia. The country has nearly 5.7 million inhabitants and does not only have a high rating in social indicators such as quality of life and education, but it is also an important international financial hub.

Addicted blackmailer was arrested and has now been sentenced

The 25-year-old was arrested by the police on the same day. The victim talked to a girlfriend immediately and together they approached the investigators. The 25-year-old perpetrator admitted to the police that he had committed the gruesome act. He also admitted that he is gambling addicted and was especially a victim of online gambling. Just a few days ago, we had reported, about which players are especially prone to become gambling addicted.

The Court in Singapore however did not show any understanding for the addiction and a few days ago the kidnapper was sentenced to a prison sentence of three years and two months. Besides this, the man was also condemned to receive twelve stick beatings.

In 2012 around 2500 persons had been condemned to receive stick beatings in Singapore. Among these there are 1000 illegal immigrants. Stick beatings is also permissible in other countries and one can also be condemned by the court to receive stick beatings in the neighbouring countries of Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia.

In 2015, the former criminal Neville Tan talked about stick beatings in an interview with the WELT. When questioned about how it feels to receive stick beatings, Tan, who is now 75 years old, replied:

“It is nothing. It is only for a short moment of time. One feels the pain for a short while, and then it is over.”

When questioned, whether stick beatings are unbearable, he replied:

“No not unbearable. Because there are security measures. A doctor examines the person beforehand and observes the blood pressure. If you have heart problems, they will not beat you. Besides, your kidneys are covered. And at the end you are given medical attention.”

Conclusion

The 25-year-old perpetrator was condemned to a prison sentence of three years and two months, as well as twelve stick beatings for kidnapping his online date and also for threatening her. Unfortunately, this case shows us once again the gruesome acts which can emerge from seemingly hopeless situations in life.
