Bayern kicked off the Bundesliga season yesterday with a 4-0 win, and although the result was too comfortable, the Munich side have shown that they intend to be more compact at the back this year. Kane made a name for himself with a goal + assist. Today's fixture is a 3.30pm match between Union Berlin and Mainz 05. Berlin have made an impressive rise from the Conference League to the Europa League and now they are playing in the Champions League.
Union Berlin with a very good summer
The Berliners have had a very good pre-season and have shown no signs of slowing down in the cup. They have also brought in two German internationals in Gosens and Volland, who can make an immediate impact. I see Gosens in particular as a great addition on the left. The defensive trio of Leite, Knoche and Doekhi are among the best in the league, and it is no coincidence that they conceded the fewest goals last year.
Mainz 05 - Fight for relegation or international places?
I suspect Mainz will end up somewhere in between. It feels like the top half of the table has become more competitive, with the likes of Frankfurt, Hoffenheim and Frankfurt. I still see Mainz behind those teams, but they are too good for the relegation zone. I expect them to finish between 9th and 12th, but anything can happen in 34 games.
My Union Berlin vs. Mainz 05 prediction
Since Union's promotion to the Bundesliga, they have adopted a defensive style of play. Berlin control the tempo and play a defensive five-man defence, which then becomes a 3-5-2 in attack. It helps that Rönnow was one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga last year. In 34 games, the Berliners conceded just 38 goals, a tactic that is unlikely to change this year. I think the game will end in a 1:0, 1:1 or 2:0 result, which is why I am backing the underdog here. Mainz do not have the creative approach or the players to break down the Berlin defence.
