Macau and Las Vegas are probably the most popular gambling destinations in the world. However, the American desert metropolis of Las Vegas still has a much greater appeal than Macau, especially among the European public. The Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China is now often far ahead of Las Vegas in terms of gambling.

It was only in May of this year that we reported on a mass brawl in a Macau casino on GambleJoe. However, the casinos in the Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China are usually much more civilised. Macau has even been dubbed the "Las Vegas of Asia". However, Macau is still underestimated as a gambling location. This is despite the fact that it now generates more revenue than Las Vegas.

Macau vs. Las Vegas: Where is more casino revenue generated?

Even before the start of the global coronavirus pandemic, casinos in the Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China were already generating significantly more revenue than casinos in Las Vegas. In fact, by 2020, casino revenue in Macau was already seven times higher than in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas casinos, for example, generate total revenue of around US$4.5 billion per year. In the first half of 2023 alone, Macau's casinos generated gross gaming revenue of almost US$10 billion. The recovery of Macau's gambling industry is mainly due to the fact that politicians have finally relaxed the strict coronavirus regulations after a long time.

Before the pandemic, Macau's casinos generated more than USD 37 billion in revenue in just one year.

Back in May 2022, we published an article about the "mind tricks" used by Las Vegas casinos. Many of these tricks are also used in Macau's casinos.

Things to know about casinos in Macau

Macau has been the world's largest gambling market since 2006, surpassing Las Vegas. In 2018 alone, more than 35 million tourists visited the special administrative region of the People's Republic of China. In Las Vegas, the figure is said to have been nearly 40 million in the same year.

There are more than 30 casinos in Macau, including the largest in the world. This is the "Venetian Macau" with a gigantic total area of around 550,000 square metres. Other well-known casinos in Macau include the Wynn Palace, the MGM Cotai and the Galaxy Macau.

Just a few weeks ago we at GambleJoe reported on the world's richest gambling bosses. Among them was self-made billionaire Lui Che Woo, who made his fortune running casinos in Macau.

Incidentally, it is just over 8,700 kilometres from the German capital of Berlin to Macau. Surprisingly, the distance between Berlin and Las Vegas is almost the same at just under 9,000 kilometres.
