Exactly a year after the new State Gambling Act (GlüStV) came into force, the German National Gambling Authority brought on board a renowned expert in gambling rights. Since the 1st. of July 2022, Nadja Wierzejewski is managing the department for combatting illegal gambling on the internet and advertisements for it. But is Wierzejewski suitable for this post?

Since the 1st. of July the Gaming Authority of all regions in Germany (GGL) has a new executive, and this is lawyer Nadja Wierzejewski. With immediate effect she is responsible for efficiently combatting illegal gambling on the internet and advertisements for it. Around a month ago we had reported that a Gauselmann subsidiary had received the first licence for online slots.

Nadja Wierzejewski aims to combat illegal gambling on the internet

In the past years, Nadja Wierzejewski was the manager of the Gambling Authority for Supervision and Service Administration of the region of Rhineland Palatinate (ADD) in Trier. Therefore, the lawyer is well experienced in the gambling industry and thus suitable for an executive position in the industry. The gambling expert is also responsible for the Transnational Gambling Supervisory Authority (LUGAS). The official press conference of the GGL about the preparations being done for the personnel to take over the responsibility of combatting illegal gambling can be accessed here (in German).

In the future, Wierzejewski and her team want to make an effort to try as best as they can to push back illegal gambling from the market. Among other things, for this purpose the GGL announced that it will be strictly monitoring the industry as well as implementing the enforcements of IP-Blocking and Payment Blocking. The Gambling Authority is inviting the members of the press to a digital press conference which will be held on the 8th. of July 2022 at 10.00am. Further information will be given during the press conference. Of course, we will also be keeping this appointment and we will inform our readers about any interesting new developments.

Just in February of this year we had reported that the website of the national German Gambling Authority is now online. The Supervisory Gaming Authority of all regions in Germany, GGL, is still in the development stages. The GGL will be starting up the operation gradually so that the transregional gambling market in Germany can be regulated as from the 1st. of January 2023.

Conclusion

Since a couple of days, the renowned gamble expert Nadja Wierzejewski is the manager of the department for combatting illegal gambling. It is already clear that a lot of work awaits Wierzejewski and her team since it is well known that fighting illegal gambling is a losing battle. Besides this, Wierzejewski has initially only been appointed to the GGL for three months. It is however a probability that the Gambling Authority will keep her longer. We are therefore excited to see how strict they will be and above all which means the GGL will be adopting in the future to combat illegal gambling offers on the internet.
