The authorities have imposed a heavy fine on the Swedish-based software provider Yggdrasil. Specifically, Yggdrasil is alleged to have supplied software to a company that does not have a licence in Sweden. But how high is the fine imposed?

At the beginning of February this year, we reported that the US internet company Meta had to pay a hefty fine for unauthorised gambling advertising in Italy. Now the renowned game developer Yggdrasil, headquartered in Stockholm, has been hit. The provider is now to pay a fine of SEK 300,000, which is the equivalent of around 26,200 euros.

Yggdrasil allegedly provided online gambling to operators without a licence

The Swedish Gambling Authority Spelinspektionen noticed during routine inspections a few weeks ago that Yggdrasil had provided software solutions to an operator without a Swedish licence without permission. The authority considers this to be a serious offence. Yggdrasil itself has only held a corresponding gambling licence for the production, provision and installation of gaming software in Sweden since the end of March last year. Back in October 2022, we at GambleJoe reported that one in four Swedes participates in online gambling.

How does Yggdrasil react to the accusation?

Six months ago, the Swedish Gambling Authority reminded software providers that they may only sell software to companies with a Swedish licence. Yggdrasil stated at the beginning of this year that stricter control mechanisms had already been implemented, meaning that no software solutions have been supplied to operators without a licence since this year at the latest.

In this case, the Swedish authorities therefore decided to only impose a fine on Yggdrasil. The alternative would have been to directly revoke the licence granted to the company last year.

Other software providers are also likely to have been warned by the imposition of the fine and may reconsider their business relationships. In November last year, for example, we reported that the live casino business at Swedish provider Evolution Gaming is booming.

In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil is the name of an ash tree that symbolises the entire cosmos. The Stockholm-based provider specialises in the development of high-quality slot machines. The top slots from Yggdrasil include Vikings Go Berzerk, Valley Of The Gods, Vikings Go To Hell and Easter Island.
