A bold theft took place some time ago in the Chinese city of Macau. Here a female casino employee was suspected to have stolen several million Euro from many VIP accounts. But how did the employee manage to defraud the customers out of such high amounts?

As the news portal Macau Business has reported in the last week, a 42-year-old female casino employee is alleged to have defrauded 70 VIP customer accounts of a casino in Macau. The sum involved runs into several million Euro. The fraudster used a simple trick to scam the casino customers of their assets.

Employee promised the customers attractive interests

The accused seems to have promised the affected VIP customers a daily interest rate of 1.1 % if they make a payment to their casino account. After the customers had affected a payment, the 42-year-old then transferred the money to other accounts. At the current point in time of the investigations it is still not clear whether there are further casino employees involved in the case. The casino employee herself seems to have insisted that she only proceeded according to instructions from the management and that she went on to further transfer the funds.

Total amount involved comes up to approximately 10 million Euro

To date, the local police could investigate a total of 70 cases in which well-to-do customers of the casino in the Chinese Macau were defrauded in this way. Currently the woman is being accused of having scammed a total amount of nearly 100 million MOP. When converted this comes up to the amount of over 10,5 million Euro.

The investigating authorities were informed of the involvement of the 42-year-old by a VIP customer. The latter had complained that he suddenly could not access his deposits of several million MOP.

Macau is situated in the Chinese special administrative zone and along the years it has followed in the footsteps of Las Vegas. Meanwhile Macau generates a revenue worth six times as much as that of the desert metropole Las Vegas. Taken as an independent state, in relation to the GDP per capita, it is the fourth largest country in the world. There are currently around 650,000 people living in Macau.

Conclusion

A female casino employee from Macau managed to defraud a total of 70 casino guests out of the amount of more than ten million Euro. The idea was to offer the VIP-customers an attractive daily rate so that they can preferably deposit a lot of money in the casino account and it seems to have functioned well. At this point in time, it is questionable, whether the fraudster had further accomplices or whether she was acting on the instructions of her boss. Since the investigations are still ongoing, there has been no court trial yet.
