NFL: Green Bay Packers - Detroit Lions

Football is a little quiet this week, so here are my NFL picks for the Thursday night games in the NFL. I had a good week in week 3 with 2/2, so I am confident going into the new week. In the night from Thursday to Friday, the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions will meet in the NFC North, and the visitors are favourites to win. Detroit played really well last year and has taken the next step this year.

Green Bay Packers: Year 1 without Aaron Rodgers

The Packers have been spoiled with their quarterbacks for a long time, first Brett Favre and then Aaron Rodgers, who has won 4 MVP titles. Unfortunately, he tore his Achilles tendon in his first game with the New York Jets this summer. Jordan Love took over at quarterback and did a decent job in the first three games, but you can tell that he is not yet up to a certain standard. Rodgers, for example, had this ability. Last week, they came back from a 17-0 deficit in the fourth quarter, benefiting from an injury to their quarterback and an easy missed field goal.

Detroit Lions - finally in the playoffs?

The Lions have often been a joke in the NFL, even failing to win a single game in a season a few years ago. Now the franchise is on the right track, having laid the foundations last season. Jared Goff is now (back) a really good quarterback with a top 3 offensive line behind him. From a German perspective, Amon-Ra St. Brown has become one of the best wide receivers in the NFL and last week he caught 100 yards again. Detroit also has a good young defence, which held the Atlanta Falcons to just six points last week.

My NFL prediction for Packers vs. Lions

I expect the Lions to win in the end, but it will be an exciting game. I trust Jared Goff to take over in the critical moments rather than Jordan Love. The Packers also have a number of injuries, with Aaron Jones and Christian Watson both doubtful this week. Detroit won both meetings last year and Aaron Rodgers was their quarterback then. I just feel more comfortable with the Lions here and I am predicting a third win in four games for the Michigan team.
