After almost three years, a lottery player from Saxony-Anhalt has finally come forward with her lottery ticket and picked up 100,000 euros. The woman had correctly picked the six-digit winning number in the Super 6 supplementary lottery in February 2021. But why did the lottery player only collect her winnings after such a long time?

At the end of August this year, we reported that a lottery jackpot of over US$1.5 billion had been won in the USA. The player from Magdeburg, Germany, who cashed in her 2021 lottery ticket a few days ago, could of course not keep up with this gigantic sum. Nevertheless, she was delighted to win €100,000. The woman submitted the correct ticket on 27 February 2021. Since then, Lotto-Toto Sachsen-Anhalt has been looking for the lucky winner, but to no avail.

Lottery player bets around 40 euros - and wins 100,000 euros

The "lucky ticket" had been played anonymously and without a customer card for four weeks at the beginning of 2021 (stake: 40.20 euros). For this reason, the lottery centre was unable to trace the winner for almost three years. However, she finally got in touch and collected her €100,000 prize. According to the player from the Magdeburg area, she wanted to use the six-figure prize to go on a long trip, among other things.

Lotto Managing Director Stefan Ebert said:

"This was the only six-figure prize that was still open for such a long time."

In theory, the Magdeburg lottery player would have had until the end of December 2024 to redeem her 2021 prize. After that it would have expired. In such a case, the forfeited prize would be included in the next draw. Just this summer we reported that in another case a winning lottery ticket had been stolen from the receiving staff.

Why did the winner hand in her lottery ticket so late?

According to Lotto-Toto Saxony-Anhalt, the winner had kept the ticket safe. This is supported by the fact that the ticket was found in excellent condition almost three years later. However, no detailed explanation has been given as to why the woman waited so long to claim her prize.

Aside from the Magdeburg woman's €100,000 prize, Lotto-Toto Saxony-Anhalt says that from 2021 there are other prizes totalling €660,000 that have yet to be claimed. However, the largest individual prize is only €5,000, so there are many smaller prizes that have yet to be paid out.

There are many reasons why a player may not collect their lottery winnings. The most common reasons are:

  1. Lost the ticket
  2. Not checking the winning numbers
  3. Not bothering to claim the smallest winnings
  4.
