Is there a smoking ban in casinos?

Very soon there could be a strict smoking ban in the casinos in the gambling metropole Atlantic City. Till now the operators may permit smoking in a quarter of the gambling area. A complete smoking ban was then introduced in the whole casino due to the restrictions of the corona pandemic.

Smoking is completely banned in most casinos in the world. The smokers can either use separate rooms or if necessary they must go out and smoke in front of the door of the premises. Till 2020 smoking was permitted in up to 25 % of the gambling areas in the US-American gambling metropole Atlantic City. Due to the restrictions of the worldwide Corona pandemic, the government then agreed to temporarily ban smoking in all casino areas. Meanwhile the strict ban has however been lifted. However, according to recent media reports in Atlantic City there could now be a strict smoking ban once again.

Atlantic City: Strict smoking ban in casinos? 

In Atlantic City there was a temporary complete ban on smoking in all areas of the total nine casinos. During 2020 this strict ban was introduced with the justification that it protects from infection. In summer of the past year this smoking ban was lifted once again. The consequence: Many casino visitors smoked in the casino area and therefore bothered the non-smokers.

That should now come to an end. According to the recent media reports, a consortium of six senators is pushing for a complete ban on smoking in the casinos in Atlantic City. Previously it was not only the other guests, but also several casino employees who had pushed for the introduction of such a smoking ban. For them the health of the employees was the priority. Till now however it is still not certain, that the draft bill will be accepted and passed. Around a year ago we reported that the Trump Plaza Hotel in Atlantic City was blasted.

Smoking in Casinos - is it necessary?

Anti-Smoking agencies have for years been campaigning for a nationwide smoking ban in casinos. There are still some gambling metropoles as Las Vegas, where smoking is permitted in the majority of casinos. Meanwhile most casinos have a separate gambling area which is non-smoking. Smoking is completely illegal in casinos in Germany.

Conclusion

We have to wait and see whether a permanent smoking ban will actually be introduced in the gambling metropole.
