Basketball Tips: Italy vs. USA
The Basketball World Cup is entering its hot phase and tomorrow the quarter finals finally start. Germany and Lithuania are the only teams still undefeated and I have a lot of faith in the DBB team. My analysis of the Germany vs. Latvia game will follow tomorrow, but today I am concentrating on the Italy vs. The Americans are still overwhelming favourites, even if the loss against Lithuania was a bitter pill to swallow. I have not liked Italy so much as the tournament has progressed, so I am going with a clear USA win.

Italy an unpleasant opponent
Italy surprisingly lost to the Dominican Republic in the group stage and had to bounce back with two wins in the intermediate round. The Italians have done just that, even if their opponents in Serbia and Puerto Rico were not from the highest echelons of the game. The Serbs are without their best players, Jokic and Micic, so they are not the big favourites. Italy are defensively sound, but often lack ideas in attack. Simone Fontecchio is often the only NBA player on the floor.

USA in shootout against Lithuania

The Americans lost their last game against Lithuania 104-110, and the Lithuanians hit every difficult shot in the game. In the end, Lithuania made over 56% of their threes, and especially in the first half, their shooting was absurd - they made their first six threes in the first quarter. I think the USA have learnt the right lessons from that and Italy are not going to have that kind of shooting percentage.

My prediction for Italy v USA
The loss to Lithuania was a shame, but this game was all about 1st place or 2nd place, and I think the USA will put the pedal to the metal and Italy will not be able to keep up. The Lithuanians have a combination of size and shooting ability that Italy lacks. I see a lot of matchup advantages for the Americans here and therefore against the basketball picks here clearly in the direction of Edwards, Bridges, Brunson and co.
