The 2023 FIBA World Championship is in full swing and the German team has already qualified for the next round with two wins in two games. Today, I focus on the top favourites from the USA as they take on Greece, who will be without their best players. For me, this is a clear-cut case and I will play the high handicap here. It is simply a class difference.

Greece without their best guards and without Giannis
Greece will be without Giannis Antetokounmpo, the former NBA MVP who is still nursing an injury. Giannis is arguably one of the five best players in the NBA and his absence will be a blow. He is joined by Sloukas and Calathes, who bring a lot of experience and are among the better Euroleague point guards. Greece is always a competitive team that plays well, but in the end it lacks individual quality.

USA the tournament's overwhelming favourites
Basketball was born in the USA, and the NBA is the best basketball league in the world. The USA could probably field 50 players who would still be among the favourites at the Basketball World Cup. The entire system in the USA is geared towards athletic development, even at school, and the pool of good players is simply enormous. The Americans struggled to get going in their first game, but eventually ran out 27-point winners.

I think the Americans will push the pace from the start and quickly build up a big lead. I also expect them to win every quarter and gradually increase their lead. The USA have the best players from position 1-12 and even if they rest their starters at the end, it will not make much difference to me. Greece do not have the scoring potential to be able to compete here.
