Several days ago a British Court condemned a former wedding planner to several years in prison. The 44-year old had previously defrauded 24 bridal couples a five -figure amount. The former wedding planner financed her gambling addiction with the loot.

The court in English Hull took it as proven, that Dana T. (44) had used the money of her victims to finance her massive gambling addiction. The wedding planner should have actually used the money which was entrusted to her, to provide an unforgettable wedding experience for her customers. Consequently the preparations for the marriage were an absolute nightmare for many couples.

Wedding planner defrauds couples of around 83,000 Euro

The gambling addicted wedding planner has defrauded her victims of around 83,000 Euro. The injured parties include 24 bridal couples. During court proceedings at the beginning of the month, the accused had even admitted, that at no point in time, had she intended to render the services in question. Instead she used the money entrusted to her to satisfy her massive gambling addiction.

A wedding planner takes care of the planning and organisation of a wedding celebration. The duties include looking for a venue and wedding clothes, choosing the menu, engaging the performers, decorating and controlling the budget. During the wedding itself, the wedding planner is more in the background. Usually the wedding planner charges a fee of around 10 to 20 per cent of the total budget.

Shortly before giving the judgement, the prosecution referred to the repudiation of the deed. At the end of the day the injured parties were bridal couples who had saved money for a long time for their big day, and this money was simply taken away by the accused. Last March we reported, that a former police man gambled away the funds collected from fines in the casino.

Fraudster promised wedding planning - and did nothing

At first the accused had promised the bona fide victims, that she will take care of the whole wedding planning. However shortly before the appointments she always excused herself and did not deliver the promised services. She also did not pay external service providers, so that even more bridal couples were complaining to the police about the woman.

Court proceedings were finally held after detailed investigations by the police. The 44-yer-old was here condemned to a prison sentence of five years. Some of the victims were present and also her former husband expressed relief at the judgement. Just a few months ago in an article we asked, how can irresponsible gambling function.

Conclusion

The case of the gambling addicted wedding planner shows, that a problematic gambling behaviour can also have massive effects at the workplace. Those affected can be motivated by their pathological gambling behaviour to commit crimes and hurt other people. In the case of the wedding planner, the total loss amounts to around 83,000 Euro. Besides this, the accused destroyed the wedding of 24 couples, which is also morally just as reprehensible. One can only hope that while she is in prison, the woman undergoes therapy for her gambling addiction, so that in the long run she can get a grip on her gambling behaviour.
