From the 17th. till the 23rd. October the European Safer Gambling Week was held. Many gambling providers took part in the European Safer Gambling Week 2022 and among other things they advertised their tools for safer gambling. How successful was this initiative?

A few days ago, the European Safer Gambling Week was held, ESGW in short. The objective was to raise awareness about safer gambling. Several online gambling providers and land-based casinos took place in this activity. Some time ago, in an older handbook of GambleJoe we had asked, how can irresponsible gambling work.

Focus on responsible gambling

Messages about responsible gambling were circulated during the European Safer Gambling Week 2022. Thus, there were several conversations on the topic, not only among players, but also among the different operators. The latter could exchange their views about the procedures they use to protect their players. The campaign was organised by the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA). This year it was the first time that The European Safer Gambling Week 2022 took place all over Europe.

Several organisations from different countries took part in this year’s event. Among these there were Portugal, Great Britain, Sweden, Ireland, Malta, Spain, Latvia, Norway, Rumania and The Netherlands. Surprisingly, Germany did not take part in the event this year. However several providers from German speaking countries advertised the European Safer Gambling Week 2022 and spread its messages. In Summer of last year we had already published an article, which tackled the issue, of how gambling addiction is recognised and how it can be tackled effectively.

In the past the Week for Responsible Gambling was already very successful. For example, last year the campaign Safer Gambling Week 2021 was carried out in the UK. Within four weeks of the event, there was an increase of nearly one fifth (17 %) in the use of tools, such as the deposit limit.

ESGW 2022: Bwin and other providers in Germany explain

The well-known gambling provider bwin informed its members in an email on the 17th. October about the European Safer Gambling Week 2022. In this email the provider advertised the tools which are available to protect the player. Among other things, the email from bwin states:

“Therefore, we would like to remind you about the gambling controls on bwin. We recommend that you take a look at our different tools which can help you to limit the time and money you spend on our website. Your gambling advice team.”

Conclusion

There was very good feedback on this year’s European Safer Gambling Week 2022. Many providers, such as bwin took an active part, by reminding their registered members to play responsibly.
