As the Maltese Gambling Authorities announced a few days ago, the gambling provider Evobet, as from 16th. July 2021, does not have a valid licence from Malta anymore. The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has revoked the gambling licence of Evobet. But what are the reasons for this radical measure?

In the recent past, the gambling provider Evobet had caught the attention of the licence authority several times, and thus had made a negative impact. Recently Evobet had already been suspended by MGA because of an infringement of the licence. Now Evobet has lost the much desired gambling licence from Malta.

Why did Evobet lose the MGA-Licence?

The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) announced in a recent press conference, that Evobet had infringed the Maltese Law. Further to this, the gambling provider had failed to carry out payments to the licensing authority on time and completely. Unfortunately, the official statement of the supervisory authority contains no detailed information about Evobet’s offences.

It is a fact, that as from the 16th. July 2021, Evobet does not have an EU-Licence from Malta any more. Among others, Evobet had a sports betting licence for the online-platforms bet11.com, sports.bet11.com as well as for m.bet11. Evobet had received the licence way back in 2012.

Reasons for the possible revocation of licence

The licensing authority mentions several reasons, why a licence which is already in possession can be revoked. Before a licence is completely revoked, it has to be suspended first, as is the case with Evobet. The MGA is in a position to revoke the licence, if the provider has infringed the rules against money laundering or against the conditions for player protection.

Even the late payment of licence fees can lead to the revocation of a licence. The revocation is also possible, if the provider is insolvent or has not processed the requested payments of the users as required.

Readers can look this up on the official website of the Maltese Gambling Authority and can see that the licence status of Evobet Limited is currently stated as “CANCELLED“:

Maltese Licence is revoked - but Evobet already has a new licence

Evobet does not hold an EU-Licence of the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) anymore. But meanwhile, the company has already applied for and received a new gambling licence from the Caribbean State Curacao. Since the MGA has revoked its licence, Evobet has however hardly any chance of receiving a German licence. Since Evobet seems to have attracted negative attention more than once, for the time being, we cannot recommend this gambling provider anymore.

It is however a fact, that currently there is a clear trend favouring the Curacao Online Casinos.

In spite of the fact, that the MGA has revoked the licence of the gambling provider, the latter is still obliged to pay the licence fees which are still due. Besides this, the MGA has requested the provider, to provide its users access to their gaming accounts, so that their credit can be paid out.

The Malta Gaming Authority has in recent past revoked the licence in several other cases. Here are some examples:

  • On the 21st. February 2020, the MGA revoked the licence of Dorobet Ltd. (MGA / B2C / 116 / 2015).
  • On the 28th. April 2020 the MGA revoked the licence of bSupporter Limited (MGA / B2B / 461 / 2017).
  • On 22nd. May 2020 the MGA revoked the licence of Global Gaming Entertainment Group Ltd. (MGA / B2B / 551 / 2018).
  • On the 6th. July 2020 the MGA revoked the licence of Join Games Malta Limited (MGA / B2B / 321 / 2016).

Conclusion

The MGA is famous all over Europe for its strict measures on player protection, as well as on money laundering prevention. In case of law infringements, the Licence Authority hands out penalties, suspends the providers and in the case of a gross breach of duty, the licence can also be revoked. In the current case, the gambling provider, Evobet has lost its EU-Licence and therefore has hardly any chance of getting permission for a German licence.
