Meanwhile the bonus programme of payback has been running for over 20 years. At first the customers could only collect the popular payback points in shops as Alnatura, dm, Rewe, real or Penny. Since some time, it has now been possible to also collect points in some online shops. But can payback points also be collected?

Around four weeks ago the “Süddeutsche Zeitung“ published an article with the headline “Payback is now attracting people to casino“. We were obviously curious: Could interested gambling enthusiasts now therefore collect payback points in the online casino? Unfortunately not. A so-called “Game World” is now available in the Payback App for Android-Users. The Payback customers can play several games here and therefore in the ideal scenario collect further points. But how does the “Game World” really function and what is the feedback of the public about the new gambling area in the Payback App?

Payback users can earn extra points - with immediate effect

The “Game World” has been available for the App users for some time. However, this is currently only available for Android Users. Thus, iPhone and iPad users have to forego this feature for the time being. There are currently more than 100 different games available in this category and they can all be downloaded by interested users. Following this the user can then hereby collect points which can later on be redeemed for valuable bonuses. Currently one point is worth around 0.01 Euro.

Payback is already receiving harsh criticism for this new “Game World”. At the end of the day customers can be enticed to play games as “Coin Master” and to use them. The game itself is free of charge and the users can also pay real money to progress quickly in the game and to be more successful. Of course through “Game World”, payback is supporting the participation of such games, since for example it explicitly advertises “Coin Master”. Further games are currently available in the “Game World” of Payback, for example we find “Match Masters”, “Homescapes” or “Gardenscapes”. The idea behind them: At the end of the day, the more one plays, the more points are collected in the player account. Payback itself states to the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, that this is a “recommendation system”, which is based “on an algorithm of our cooperation partner adjoe”.

Users must confirm twice that they are at least 18 years old to be able to access the corresponding area of the Payback-App. In September 2021, we reported about the fact that in China there are strict gaming regulations for children. They are only allowed to spend a maximum of three hours per week on gaming – and these hours may only be during the weekend.

The Bonus system Payback is operated by the company which bears the same name, PAYBACK Ltd. which was founded way back in 2000 and which is based in Munich. The company which has around 1000 employees has recently generated a turnover of nearly 285 million Euro. The customers collect points for every Euro spent when shopping at one of the 700 partners. Payback can then analyse in detail the shopping habits through this system. For more than ten years Payback Ltd. has belonged to the credit card company American Express.

Collecting payback points in the online casino. Is this possible?

According to their own information, Payback has nearly 700 partners, just in Germany. These are not only just the many local payback partners, but there also many online shops. Customers can for example collect points in supermarkets as real, or Penny or in shops as WMF, Babywalz, Alnatura, dm, Fressnapf, Thalia, myToys, Globus or Nahkauf. Among the most famous partners on the internet, there are OTTO, Booking.com, Saturn, H&M, Conrad, Lieferando, Media Markt, Tchibo, TUI, About You and Weltbild.

Currently no Payback points can be collected in any online casino. Of course, Payback does not want to directly support gambling activities, since in this case, there is the danger that the players, in their motivation to collect payback points, may earlier or later suffer from a problematic gambling addiction. In its new project, Payback itself is attaching great importance to distance itself from gambling. A spokesperson for the company stated to the Süddeutsche Zeitung:

“These are simply fun games, no gambling or any other critical types of gambling.“

Is it worthwhile to collect Payback points?

In many shops users can get a Payback point for every two Euro which is exchanged. This for example is the case at OTTO, dm or Saturn. The collected points can then be exchanged at any time against the prizes which are offered at the Payback shop. We have taken a look at the Payback Shop to see whether it is worthwhile at all to collect the points.

Example 1: Moulinex Kettle Soleil BY320 B

At Payback this product currently costs 4299 points. To collect this number of points, the customer needs to spend 8598 Euro at the partner shops. We then found the same kettle of the same brand for 57.89 Euro on Amazon. This means that one must shop and spend 8600 Euro to get a free product which at the end of the day can be bought for nearly 58 Euro. That comes up to a discount of significantly less than one per cent.

Example 2: JBL loudspeaker Flip 6 black

We could buy this product in the Payback shop for reduced points - 9299 points. Accordingly, one must shop and spend 18,598 Euro to collect this number of points. We found the transportable loudspeaker box for nearly 130 Euro on Amazon. Even in this case therefore the discount acquired by using payback would be significantly less than one per cent.

Conclusion

When participating in the bonus programme of Payback, it is completely free of charge, so that no participant is at a disadvantage. However, customers should be aware that payback has analyses the money which is spent. The advantages, which are acquires by collecting points are very minimal, as our calculations have shown. Gambling enthusiasts can still not collect points in online casinos and online gambling halls. However, Payback is now offering the new section called “Game World”, in which social casino-games as “Coin Master” can be played. In April 2021 we had published an interesting article with the heading “Social Casino - a trend to lookout for“.
