Denmark had liberalised the gaming market around ten years ago. Since then, more Danes are making use of the gambling offers which are available to them. However, the channelisation rate meanwhile exceeds 90 %. Why are the legalised gambling providers in Denmark so popular?

A few days ago, the Danish Gambling Authority Spillemyndigheden issued an interesting press conference. The press conference tackled the channelisation after the liberalisation of the online gaming market. The Authority also spoke about the development in the turnover in the online casinos. Way back in 2012, the Danes had decided to liberalise the online gaming market.

Channelisation rate in Denmark at an impressive 90 %

During the press conference it was especially interesting to note that nowadays the majority of the Danish population make use of legal online gambling offers. In 2021 the channelisation rate was at 90 %. This means that nine from ten players are active in an online casino or play at an online betting provider with a Danish licence.

In March of last year we had already reported about the decreasing channelisation rate in Sweden.

Danes’ gambling expenses double since the liberalisation

It is interesting to note that the gambling expenses of the Danish population has more than doubled within the last ten years, i.e. since the market was liberalised. Whilst in 2012 the national expenditure for online gambling was still around 1.6 billion DDK, therefore around 215 million Euro, ten years later it was significantly more, at around 3.3 billion DDK, i.e. 434 million Euro. This information was announced by the Danish gambling watchdog in the recent press conference.

The fact that these offers are attractive shows the success of the legal online gambling market. Besides this, the responsible gambling authority seems to be proceeding fast and with less bureaucracy when issuing the licences. In 2021, the Authority Spillemyndigheden issued 57 new licences. This means that the politicians have taken into account the wish of the Danish players to have a large selection of legal gambling products.

The Danish Gambling Authority is also making use of IP-Blocking to block illegal gambling products. A few weeks ago, a Danish Court has confirmed that the blocking of more than 80 illegal online casinos is permissible in Denmark.

Conclusion

Denmark should be proud with the high percentage rate of channelisation. This means that around 90 % of the Danish players use products with a Danish gambling licence. In most countries, the channelisation rate is significantly lower.
